USAID & GIZ Launch India’s First International Conference on Large-Scale Grid Integration of Renewable Energy

Today’s international conference has been organized under USAID’s bilateral program with the Ministry of Power called the Greening the Grid and showcases our efforts to increase knowledge exchange between the United States and India to put in place solutions that will move India closer to achieving 175 GW of RE capacity.”

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Deutsche Gesellschaft for Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), under the bilateral cooperation with the Ministry of Power (MOP) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), jointly hosted India’s first international conference on “Large-Scale Grid Integration of Renewable Energy” in New Delhi on September 6-8, 2017.
More than 400 participants including energy experts, practitioners and academicians from 18 different countries, 60 invited national and international speakers presented papers and 120- plus organizations including private and public companies, research institutions and universities attended the three-day long International Conference. Several international experts from power utilities (MISO, Xcel Energy, Energinet, etc.), system operators (ERCOT, 50 Hertz, ENTSO etc.), technical institutions (NREL, LBNL, IEA, IRENA, etc.), regulators (NARUC), and private organizations (GE, AWS Truepower, Siemens, etc.) from the U.S., Germany and other European countries shared their project experiences, innovative ideas, and results from ongoing research.
The conference aimed to stimulate interdisciplinary thinking between Renewable Energy (RE) developers, power transmission and distribution industries, as well as education and research institutions. The opening day covered deliberations among representatives from Ministry of Power (MOP), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Central Electricity and Regulatory Commission (CERC), and Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) on technical and economic issues.
The conference focused on RE grid integration aspects ranging from forecasting, reliable system operation, transmission and market operation for reliable grid operations under high variability that accompanies clean energy.

More than 450 representatives and energy experts from 16 countries attended the three-day conference, jointly convened by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the U.K.’s Department for International Development (DFID) from September 4-6, to share information on large-scale grid integration and its benefits to countries like India, which has embarked on one of the most ambitious clean energy programs in the world.
