India’s transforming energy sector: Celebrating the U.S-India partnership, charting a stronger journey forward

India’s clean energy transition is continuing at an accelerated pace, with commitment, vigour, and a clear focus on non-fossil fuel-based generation, self-reliance, climate action, technology advancement, economic growth, and energy security. The country’s installed renewable energy (RE) capacity has already crossed 100 GW (excluding large hydro), showcasing remarkable progress toward India’s goal to deploy 450 GW of RE by 2030.

As a long-standing partner committed to India’s reform agenda, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has been partnering with India’s Ministry of Power (MoP) to adopt innovative, evidence-based solutions to emerging energy-sector needs. USAID’s Greening the Grid (GTG) program, a five-year bilateral initiative with the MoP, has worked to lay the building blocks for large-scale RE integration into India’s electricity grid. GTG is a key mechanism contributing to the U.S.-India Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP), one of the key tracks under U.S-India Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership.

In the run up to the U.S.- India SCEP Ministerial on September 10, 2021, USAID and MoP jointly organized a two-day virtual conference — titled ‘National Conference on Large-Scale Integration of Renewable Energy in India: Transforming India’s Power Landscape ’ — on August 24–25, 2021. Celebrating the energy-sector collaboration of the two nations, the conference disseminated the wealth of knowledge and rich insights that the GTG program has yielded.

320 participants, representing 20+ countries and 200+ organizations, attended the conference and gained an understanding of the outcomes, challenges, and lessons from the GTG program as well as heard energy leaders deliberate the way forward. More than 40 national and international speakers addressed the conference, which also marked the release of 3 key reports. India’s energy leaders and power sector champions from the MoP, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), POSOCO, POWERGRID, NTPC Ltd, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL), and other key bodies shared forward-looking insights on the imperatives for smooth RE integration into India’s grid. The sector leaders deliberated and discussed the milestones achieved, the challenges that remain, and the scalability opportunities that must be harnessed.
